Steve Tomlinson Memorial Topless Modified Shootout, Remax Night at the Races,
South Texas Speedway 6/9/07
By J M Hallas
Corpus Christi, Tx.(June 9th, 2007) In a fitting tribute to a fallen racer, South Texas Speedway renamed it’s Topless Modified Shootout after Mission, Tx. driver Steve Tomlinson. The race, normally scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, was postponed because of weather. Tomlinson, a former drag racer who was 52, was a true racer, fielding cars in both the Modified and Limited Modifieds classes in only his first few months of dirt racing. While running last years race, Tomlinson jumped from his Limited Modified and began the feature in the Modified class, as he would any other weekend.
Unfortunately this would be his final start.
During the feature race, Tomlinson suffered a heart attack after moving up to tenth from his 26th starting spot in the field. His car continued on crashing into the wall in turn 2, where a Memorial sign now sits. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the stricken driver after extricating him from the car. He was then transported to Christus Spahn Hospital where he took his last checkered flag.
Majek Marches to Tomlinson Memorial Modified Main
Local veteran and current South Texas Spwy. Modified points leader, Steve Majek got by early leader, Bobby Maupin then held off young gun Steve Whiteaker jr to take the Steve Tomlinson Memorial Topless Modified A-main victory and the $1,000 payday.
On the initial start, Bobby Maupin got the lead going into turn 1, but in the pack Chris Rye, Derrick Flora, Joey Hienaman, Nicky Hardcastle and Raymond Tague all got tangled in turn 1. The second start saw, Maupin again grab the point with Majek and Mike Riley falling into second and third. Maupin and Majek were wheel to wheel for the lead on lap when Dale Flanagan and Brian Rye got together in turns 1-2 for another quick caution.
On the restart, Steve Whiteaker jr got by Riley on the high side for third, then took a look low on Maupin for second. Lawrence Mikulencak got past Darin Leonard for sixth on lap 3, but Leonard fought back until Mikulencak secured the spot a lap later. Bruce Barber spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow on lap 5. Back under green, Whiteaker snagged second from Maupin, while Mikulencak and Riley ran side by side for fourth.
Riley then fell back to the clutches of Leonard who grabbed fifth on lap 6. The top five spread out by lap 8 with Majek inching away from Whiteaker. Danny Brown was making his way to the front getting by Brian Rye for seventh on lap 9. Leonard, who has suffered hard luck all year, saw his top five go by the wayside when he dropped the driveshaft on lap 11. On the restart, Mikulencak looked inside teammate, Maupin for third but couldn’t get around.
As the crossed flags were shown it was Majek, Whiteaker, Maupin, Mikulencak and Riley in the top five. Brown moved in on Riley for fifth on lap 13, while Mikulencak again tried low on Maupin for third. Mikulencak finally got the position on lap 14. Majek was building on his lead until caution on lap 15 when Hardcastle lost a driveshaft. Majek got a good jump as the green waved getting away from Whiteaker by a couple car lengths.
Brown got by Riley finally on lap16, while Whiteaker was trying to reel Majek back in. Maupin and Mikulencak continued their fight for third until Maupin spun on lap 19. He was able to continue, but pulled to the pits. With five to go, Majek had a five car length advantage over Whiteaker, with a gap back to Mikulencak and Brown. On the final Whiteaker gave it one last try to catch Majek but ended up doing a half spin, side-tracking through the infield, and losing a couple spots. Majek, driving the Majek Tile & Marble, Larsen Chassis easily took the checkers ahead of Mikulencak and Brown.
Huston Hustles to Limited Modified Win
TJ Huston and Andy Van Blarcum led the 22-car Limited Modified field to green for the 25-lap, $1,000 to win A-main. Huston got the jump on green to get the lead with Van Blarcum falling into second. Van Blarcum threw the spot away on lap 1 when he spun in turn 2. Most of field scattered and cleared, but Tommy Bell and Devin Adler both got collected. On the restart Steve Whiteaker sr. and Aaron Hudgeons both got past Brandon Blaylock for second and third.
Whiteaker and Hudgeons made contact fighting for second, but both continued on, while Bobby Maupin got by Jerry Majek for fifth. John Heinaman brought out yellow on lap 4 when he spun in turn 4. Maupin got around Blaylock for fourth once back to green, while Lawrence Mikulencak began his charge taking eighth from Jim Rabe. Whiteaker tried Huston for the lead on lap 6 but lost ground.
Mikulencak had just taken sixth from Majek and Shane Hoefling on lap 9, when Majek spun to bring out a caution. On the try for a restart, the back of the pack accordianed, with Majek ending up submarining Mark Salinas. Finally back to green, Huston got a couple car lengths on Whiteaker. At halfway it was Huston, Whiteaker, Hudgeons, Maupin and Blaylock in the top five.
Mikulencak caught Blaylock with the two side by side on lap 15 and Mikulencak eventually getting the position. By lap 17 the top four were in traffic and it was Huston able to increase his advantage over Whiteaker and Mikulencak reeling in Maupin. With two to go, Huston had a comfortable lead over Whiteaker who now had Hudgeons on his bumper. As the duo scrapped it for second on the final lap, Hudgeons got sideways, and drove through the infield losing two spots. At the checkers it was McAllen’s, Huston driving the Driveline International, The Race Place, Valley Powdercoat, Pflugerville Engine and Machine, Big Chief Chassis taking home the win.
The Limited Modified B-main would take the top four to back of the A-main and at green, Russell Salinas got the lead. Adam Schach got second on lap 3, while Shawn Feely, Tom Tomlinson and Lloyd Vernon battled early for the fourth spot. With Schach running down Salinas, Chris Del Bosque took over the all important fourth position. Feely and Del Bosque would trade the spot on lap 7.
Schach caught Salinas in traffic at the mid point, with Tomlinson, Feely and Del Bosque rounding out the top five. Schach snuck by Salinas on lap 12 just as yellow waved for a spin by Del Bosque. Once back under green Schach got the bumper ahead of Salinas and secured the lead on lap 12 bringing Tomlinson along to second. Feely’s hopes for a transfer ended when he broke and pulled to the infield. In the final laps, Tomlinson was able to get around Schach and quite fittingly earn the victory and trip to the A-main in the race named after his fallen father.
Heat winners, TJ Huston, Andy Van Blarcum, Steve Whiteaker sr., Brandon Blaylock
Hobby Stock
Mark Gavlik got out front at the start of the 20-lap Hobby Stock feature, leaving everyone else scrambling for second. Barry Major brought out yellow on lap 1 when he looped his ride. With Gavlik away clean on the restart, Bill Stephens took a peek inside Ziggy Reusser for second. Stephens finally got by Z. Reusser on lap 4, just as Major spun again.
At the mid point, Steve Grantz got by Howie Marcx for fourth, while Gavlik was stretching out his lead up front. Bill Stephens brought out yellow on lap 13 when he spun himself out of second in turn 2. On the restart Grantz and Z. Reusser were side by side for second, while Cliff Reusser, Stephens and Major battled for fourth. As the white waved, Gavlik had nearly a half straight lead over Reusser and Grantz. Gavlik took the win and coupled with James Myers not in the show, unofficially takes over the points lead in the All American Car Wash, Quality Powerwash, Multi-Chem, Always Cool A/C, Clearvision Windshield Repair, Valvoline Express Care, Absalute Detailing, CC Collision, Casas Fleet Service, Travelers Total Care

Pure Stock
The 20-car, 20-lap Pure Stock feature saw Curtis King jump into the early lead. Brian Titzman got along side King on the back stretch, but King help the point on lap 1. Titzman and Gene Hyde both got by King, with King taking the lead on lap 2. Abe Meres III had just gotten around King for third when yellow waved for Darryl Prosek who lost an axle in turn 4. Once back to green King slipped up giving Titzman the chance to retake second. The two ran side by side on lap until a bumper on the track brought the yellow back out.
On the restart, Mares got by King for third, with Sam Myers following into fourth. Mares picked off another spot on lap 8 taking second from Titzman, who then lost third to Myers on lap 9. At halfway it was Hyde, with a big lead, Mares, Myers, Titzman and Paul Voigt rounding out the top five. Voigt got by Titzman in traffic with Scott Diem moving in. Diem and Titzman swapped fifth, while up front Mares and Myers were door to door for second.
With five to go, Hyde had built a full straightaway lead over the trio now scrapping for second. With Mares, Myers and Voigt battling for second, Diem and Titzman were able to close back in. In the final laps Diem and Voigt made contact fighting for fifth and causing Voigt to slow. Up front it was current points leader, Hyde in the Bill Myers Repair Service, Ace Transmission, Flanagans Muffler, R&B Paint and Body, Chevy taking the win by a large margin.
